Languages do more than label things: they carry stories, humour, local history, environmental knowledge, relationships, and ways of seeing the world. When a language is no longer passed to children, a community may lose an everyday space for memory and identity, even when records remain. Language shift can be driven by discrimination, migration, schooling in a dominant language, economic pressure, or parents’ wish to protect children from stigma. It is therefore not simply a matter of speaker numbers.
AI can create archives, transcribe recordings, support dictionaries, and build learning tools such as speech recognition or keyboard suggestions. Yet endangered languages are often low-resource: data may be scarce, or material may represent only certain dialects, speakers, or public knowledge. Systems can then produce confident but inaccurate translations and flatten cultural meaning. The central question is governance: communities should decide what is recorded, shared, restricted, or removed, and how benefits return to them. Technology can assist revitalization, but living use across generations, not an archive alone, keeps a language alive.
