1-minute overview

Many long-term couples notice that the rush of a new romance changes with time. Daily routines, shared responsibilities, and familiarity can make a partner feel emotionally safe but less surprising. This does not necessarily signal that love has failed: research distinguishes between early-stage infatuation and lasting romantic attachment, while showing that intimacy, satisfaction, and desire can move in different directions.

The central question is not whether every relationship should remain thrilling, but what kind of aliveness each couple wants. Stability can support trust, friendship, and resilience; excitement can create curiosity, play, and renewed attraction. Shared new experiences may help, but so may individual interests, honest conversations, affection, and protected time. The challenge is avoiding two false choices: comfort versus romance, or independence versus commitment. Couples may differ widely in how much novelty they need and in what romance actually means to them. It is also worth asking whether pressure to perform passion can undermine the security that makes genuine closeness possible.
