1-minute overview

Comparing ourselves with other people is a normal way of judging our abilities, progress, and place in a group. We often look at people who seem similar to us: colleagues at the same career stage, friends with comparable lifestyles, or siblings growing up in the same family. An upward comparison, with someone who appears more successful, can provide a useful model and encourage effort. But it can also feel discouraging when the gap seems impossible to close.

Social media can intensify this process because it presents a carefully selected view of other people’s lives. Salary, appearance, professional status, and parenting are especially sensitive areas because they can become measures of personal worth. The key issue may not be whether comparison happens, but what we do with it. Does it give us realistic information and a practical goal, or does it turn another person’s success into evidence of our own failure? Healthy competition may require both ambition and the ability to value people without needing to outperform them.
