1-minute overview

Cooking at home is often presented as the answer to high food costs and unhealthy diets, but its value depends on what people count. The price of ingredients may be lower than a restaurant meal, yet planning, shopping, preparation, washing up, and wasted leftovers also carry costs. In the United States, people who prepare food and clean up on a given day spend a little over an hour on those tasks on average, so convenience is not an imaginary benefit.

Home cooking can offer control over portions, ingredients, and seasoning, but it does not automatically make a meal nutritious, inexpensive, or enjoyable. A simple rotation of reliable meals, basic knife skills, and planned leftovers can reduce the burden. Sharing shopping, cooking, and cleanup may also make the work fairer in a household. Still, ordering food can be a sensible choice during illness, intense work periods, travel, or a need for rest. The key question is not whether home cooking is always best, but when it gives enough value for the time and energy it requires.
