1-minute overview

Many apps assume that people are always connected, but real life includes tunnels, rural travel, power cuts, expensive data, overloaded networks, and simply choosing to save mobile data. When a connection disappears, an app may still let users read saved information, draft work, view tickets, or make a payment request later. Other functions, such as live maps, fraud checks, and shared editing, genuinely depend on current data.

The debate is therefore not simply online versus offline. Offline-friendly design can widen access and make services more resilient, especially when users need banking, health, transport, or public information. Yet it also creates difficult technical questions: what should be stored on a device, how can private data remain secure, and what happens when two versions of the same information conflict after reconnection? Companies may see offline support as costly, while users may see its absence as evidence that an app was designed for people with reliable, affordable internet. The key issue is whether offline access is a premium feature or a basic standard for essential digital services.
