1-minute overview

Cafés have long been places to meet, read, study, and spend time alone. Remote work has made them informal workplaces too: a laptop user may visit regularly, buy food and drinks, and help create a lively atmosphere. For some people, working outside the home improves focus or reduces isolation.

The tension appears when seating is scarce. A person who occupies a four-seat table for hours after one small purchase may prevent groups or faster-turnover customers from finding a place to sit. From the café’s perspective, every table must help cover rent, wages, and other costs. From the customer’s perspective, unclear rules can feel embarrassing or unfriendly.

A complete ban is simple but may exclude students, freelancers, and regular customers. Alternatives include laptop-free periods at peak times, designated work tables, minimum-spend expectations, or limits that begin only when the café is full. The central question is whether a café should primarily be a workspace, a social “third place,” or a flexible mix of both.
