1-minute overview

Salary ranges in job advertisements have become a major workplace-policy issue. Supporters say they save applicants time, reduce the advantage held by employers in negotiations, and make unjustified pay gaps easier to identify. Several jurisdictions now require some form of disclosure, while the European Union’s newer rules require applicants to receive starting-pay information or a range no later than before an interview. Recent research on US posting mandates suggests that disclosure became much more common and wages rose modestly, without clear overall effects on employment or the number of vacancies.

Yet transparency is not automatically the same as fairness. A very broad range may reveal little about the likely offer, while a narrow one can limit flexibility for unusual experience, scarce skills, local costs, or changing business needs. Small employers may also lack formal pay systems. The central question is whether every advertised role should have a realistic, evidence-based range—and how a rule can prevent vague compliance without turning pay decisions into a rigid formula.
