1-minute overview

When a customer opens a support chat, the first question may be practical: can this system solve my problem? Yet identity also matters. A human agent can listen, show judgement and take responsibility; an AI assistant can respond instantly, operate around the clock and handle large volumes of routine requests. The difficulty is that a friendly, human-like style may blur the difference precisely when a customer needs to judge the answer’s reliability.

As of August 2, 2026, EU transparency rules require certain interactive AI systems, including chatbots, to inform people that they are interacting with AI. But disclosure alone does not settle the ethical questions. Companies must decide how visible the notice should be, how easily customers can reach a person, and who corrects an error or compensates a loss. The strongest approach may combine a clear introduction, honest statements about limitations, privacy protection, records of important decisions, and rapid human escalation for high-stakes, complex or emotionally sensitive cases.
