1-minute overview

Right to repair is the idea that people and independent shops should be able to diagnose, maintain, and fix products they own. Supporters argue that access to affordable parts, tools, software, and manuals makes ownership more meaningful, lowers repair bills, and keeps devices in use for longer. They also connect repairability to electronic waste: when a battery, screen, or small component fails, replacing an entire device can seem wasteful.

Manufacturers respond that tightly integrated designs can improve performance, water resistance, and security, while poor-quality parts or untrained repairs can create safety risks. The central question is not simply whether anyone should open every device. It is how to balance consumer choice and competition with reliable products, data protection, intellectual property, and responsibility when something goes wrong. Laws in several places increasingly require some repair access, but their coverage, timelines, and exemptions differ. A fair system might distinguish between routine repairs and work involving high-voltage batteries or sensitive security systems.
