1-minute overview

Phones, messaging platforms, and global teams have made it easy for work to follow people home. A message sent late at night may be intended as information for tomorrow, yet it can create an expectation of immediate attention. The debate is often called the right to disconnect: the idea that employees should be able to ignore work communications outside agreed hours without penalty. France requires negotiation on this issue in certain workplaces, and Australia has introduced a legal right to refuse unreasonable out-of-hours contact.

Supporters argue that real downtime protects rest, family life, and long-term performance. Critics worry that rigid rules may reduce flexibility, especially when colleagues work across time zones or when urgent decisions are needed. The central question is not simply whether one reply takes a minute. It is whether constant availability shifts unpaid responsibility onto employees and makes switching off feel risky. A fair policy may need clear expectations, genuine exceptions, and managers who model the boundaries they expect others to respect.
