1-minute overview

Office dress codes once signaled hierarchy, discipline, and belonging. In many offices, however, business suits and formal shoes have given way to business casual, especially as hybrid work has changed expectations. This shift raises a practical question: if employees can work effectively in comfortable clothes at home, what purpose should formal office clothing serve?

Supporters of dress codes argue that appearance can communicate reliability, protect safety, and create a consistent experience for clients. Critics respond that “professional” is often vague and may favor particular class, cultural, gender, religious, or body norms. A rule that seems neutral can also be applied unevenly. The debate is therefore not simply formal versus casual. It is about who gets to define professionalism, when personal expression matters, and whether a company can set clear standards without turning clothes into a test of conformity. The strongest policies may distinguish genuine job-related needs from preferences that are mostly symbolic.
