1-minute overview

Phones and computers can remain physically functional long after their makers stop providing software support. Yet a device without security patches may expose users to fraud, data loss, or incompatible apps, while an unavailable battery or screen can turn a small fault into a reason to replace it. The question is therefore not simply how long hardware lasts, but what “usable” should mean: safe, repairable, fast enough, and compatible with essential services.

Governments are beginning to set baselines. Since June 2025, EU rules for many phones and tablets have combined longer update availability with repair-related requirements, although the exact timelines and product scope differ from a simple seven-year promise. Supporters of a seven-year minimum argue that clear guarantees would reward durable design, help second-hand buyers, and reduce premature waste. Critics question whether a single rule fits low-cost phones, laptops, smart-home products, and rapidly changing security risks. They also warn that longer commitments could raise prices or discourage experimentation. A key issue is transparency: consumers may make better choices if support dates, repairability, and spare-part access are clear before purchase.
