1-minute overview

Many people experience a drop in energy and concentration during the working day, especially after lunch or after long periods of demanding tasks. A short, planned nap may seem like a practical response rather than a sign of poor motivation. Guidance from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health notes that brief naps of roughly 15–30 minutes can improve alertness and reduce fatigue. However, a nap is not equally useful for everyone: some people wake up feeling groggy, and late or lengthy naps may interfere with nighttime sleep.

For employers, the question is not simply whether sleep is acceptable at work. It is also about fairness, workplace culture, safety, and space. A quiet nap room could support employees who work shifts, commute long distances, or have caring responsibilities. On the other hand, workers in customer-facing or tightly scheduled jobs may have less freedom to use it. A good policy might treat naps as one optional recovery tool alongside walking breaks, quiet rooms, flexible scheduling, and reasonable workloads.
