1-minute overview

Moving away from home is often treated as a milestone of adulthood, but the meaning of that step varies widely. In the United States, 49% of adults under 30 lived with a parent in 2025. Across the European Union, the average age of leaving home was 26.2 in 2024, yet national averages ranged from about 21 in Finland to over 30 in several southern and eastern countries. Housing costs, study, work opportunities, family expectations, and care responsibilities all shape the decision.

Living independently can develop practical habits: budgeting, cooking, managing time, and solving everyday problems. However, living with family does not automatically mean dependence. A young adult may contribute money, share domestic work, save for a goal, or care for relatives. Conversely, someone living alone may still rely heavily on parental support.

The central question is not whether one arrangement is universally superior. It is whether the arrangement gives a person growing autonomy, financial stability, healthy relationships, and a realistic path toward their own goals.
