1-minute overview
Shoes that charge a phone sound like a simple upgrade to everyday life: each step could produce a little electricity instead of letting movement go to waste. Most concepts use energy-harvesting materials that respond to pressure, bending, or vibration inside the sole. The electricity must then be converted, stored, and delivered safely through a battery or charging circuit.
The exciting part is independence from wall sockets, especially for hikers, emergency workers, or people who spend long hours outdoors. However, the practical limits are important. Walking can generate enough power for small sensors or low-energy wearable devices, but fully charging a modern smartphone would probably require a great deal of walking with current designs. Engineers also have to balance energy output against weight, cost, durability, waterproofing, and comfort. If a shoe becomes stiff or makes walking harder, the user may effectively supply more energy than the device gains. The bigger question may be whether this technology is best for charging phones—or for powering smaller devices continuously.

Useful vocabulary
Approx. CEFR · Topic relevance
energy harvesting
the process of collecting small amounts of usable energy from movement, heat, light, or the environment
Energy harvesting could make small health sensors less dependent on disposable batteries.
piezoelectric
/ˌpaɪizoʊɪˈlɛktrɪk/able to produce an electric charge when pressed, bent, or otherwise stressed
A piezoelectric layer in the sole could generate electricity every time the heel hits the ground.
power output
the amount of electrical power a device produces
The key issue is whether the power output is useful in real daily conditions.
conversion efficiency
the proportion of available energy that is successfully changed into useful electricity
Better conversion efficiency would mean that fewer steps are needed for the same amount of charge.
trade-off
a situation in which gaining one advantage requires accepting a disadvantage
There may be a trade-off between a flexible shoe and a system that produces more power.
durability
/ˌdʊrəˈbɪləti/the ability to remain effective after long use or difficult conditions
For me, durability matters more than a small amount of emergency phone charge.

Use this to explain why a general answer may not fit every case.
It depends largely on the scale of the charge: powering a sensor is very different from charging a phone.
A more realistic application might be ...
Use this to suggest a narrower or more achievable use.
A more realistic application might be keeping a safety tracker charged during a long hike.

Use this to challenge an idea politely and analytically.
I would question the assumption that every form of human movement should be turned into electricity.
