1-minute overview
Imagine opening an envelope and recognizing your own handwriting, but not quite your own voice. A letter from a younger self is a small time capsule: it records what you hoped for, feared and assumed would be true. Psychologists often describe this as a question of self-continuity, meaning how connected we feel to who we were and who we will become. Research by Hal Hershfield and others suggests that people who feel closer to their future selves tend to plan more carefully, and some newer studies use letters or AI simulations to strengthen that link.
The past self raises its own puzzles. Memory is reconstructive, so a letter can contradict the story we now tell about our lives. It may bring pride, or comfort, or embarrassment, or grief for abandoned plans.
The key tensions are easy to name. Is the younger self a wise witness or a naive stranger? Should we honor old ambitions or outgrow them? And would reading such a letter help us decide better today, or simply make us nostalgic?
