Marhaban everyone! my name is Bilel and I'm from Tunisia . I have a bachelor's degree in English (International Relations). I have worked as a translator, International Business Developer and a director in a teaching center. After COVID, I started my carrier as a part-time English teacher in Tunis, the capital city of Tunisia. I'm an ambitious person, and never give up my dream of working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tunisia, and why not be an ambassador someday!?

1-minute overview
Online reviews have become a form of shared consumer memory. Many shoppers use them to reduce risk when they cannot touch or test a product. Yet the system is vulnerable. Fake and incentivized reviews are common, and regulators have responded. In the United States, a Federal Trade Commission rule took effect in October 2024. It bans fake or AI-generated reviews, paid reviews and undisclosed insider reviews. It also bans the sale of false trust indicators, and violations can carry large civil penalties.
A verified-buyer label offers one answer. It suggests the reviewer really purchased the item, which may screen out some outsiders and bots. But it is not a guarantee of honesty. A buyer may have received a refund, a discount or a gift for posting. Others may review only when they feel delighted or furious, or may judge delivery rather than quality.
The key tension is between authenticity and completeness. Restricting reviews to buyers may raise confidence, but it may also exclude informed critics, reduce the number of reviews and give platforms more control over what shoppers see.

Useful vocabulary
Approx. CEFR · Topic relevance

A verified purchase badge helps, but it does not prove the reviewer was honest.
incentivized review

I trust an incentivized review less unless the reviewer clearly discloses the reward.

A 4.9 rating from six people has a very small sample size.
self-selection bias

Self-selection bias may explain why reviews often come from very happy or very angry customers.
moderation
/ˌmɑːdəˈreɪʃən/The process of checking, filtering or removing user content according to platform rules.
Strong moderation can remove abuse, but it may also hide legitimate criticism.
